PLANNING APPROVAL SECURED FOR PAPER YARD DEVELOPMENT IN BIRMINGHAM’S HISTORIC GUN QUARTER

Over 60% Sold At Photographic Works

Planning permission has been secured for a major regeneration scheme by Hatchbury which will see new homes created on a former industrial site in Birmingham’s historic Gun Quarter.

The Paper Yard development will see a mix of 77 apartments and duplexes brought forward on a prominent site on the corner of Princip Street and Lower Loveday Street, in Newtown. It has been named in honour of the site’s past as a box and cardboard factory.

Birmingham City planners approved the proposal after hearing how the project would provide a residential development of “high-quality design”, which added to the housing mix available across the city, contributing to the shortfall in housing land supply, on a brown field site in a sustainable location.

The building has been designed by Birmingham-based BPN architects to include spacious high-quality homes featuring innovative external spaces, such as private balconies, terraces, and gardens, complemented by a communal, maturely landscaped courtyard.

The scheme follows the success of Hatchbury’s award-winning Photographic Works development, completed in 2023, which transformed the site of a former photo processing building, in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, into 50 beautiful new homes.

Within a stone’s throw from Birmingham Snow Hill railway station, New Street station, and Aston Campus, Paper Yard will offer a central living experience in the heart of the city, with close proximity to key destinations.

Encompassing a gross area of approximately 2,000sqm, Paper Yard will offer a blend of private and communal outdoor spaces. Clever design including bespoke balustrades, recessed brick patterns, and arched entrances, will see the building reflect the design elements seen in the local area.

John Kennedy, Director of Hatchbury, said: “Given that our ethos at Hatchbury is to ‘retain and enhance’, Paper Yard is a great example of the sort of project which we enjoy bringing forward. We look forward to this scheme bringing new life to a city centre site, creating much-needed new homes and adding value to the local area.”
